Science Day in P4/5

21st Nov 2023

We carried out 2 experiments as part of our Science Day.

The Magic Milk experiment involved adding food colouring to milk and observing what happened next. When we dipped a cotton wool tip into the milk, nothing happened. However when we dipped it into dish soap and then touched the milk, the colours began to swirl. We learned that milk is made up of mineral, proteins and fats. When dish soap enters the milk the fat begins to break up. The soap molecules run around and try to attach to the fat molecules in the milk. The food colouring helped us to see all the movement taking place. The movement was the most noticeable in the whole milk, as it contained more fat molecules than semi-skimmed or skimmed.

Next we used a variety of water, oil and food colouring in a plastic tumbler. When we added an Alka Selzter tablet to it the food colouring rose through the oil and water and turned the plastic tumbler into a mini lava lamp.

A great afternoon’s learning and fun.
